Handcrafter's Spin Off Contest Information

Have your fiber spun and judged by expert hand spinners.

Entry is easy ---Just send us a package with the following:

We'll have it spun by experienced hand-spinners, judge it, and display it at the MIAF 2008 Show!

Judging criteria will be:

  • First impression
  • Staple length
  • Uniformity
  • Skirting
  • Ease of preparation for spinning
  • Ease of spinning
  • Appeal of yarn
  • Points will be deducted for entries weighing less than 2 oz.

Enteries will be accepted from May 1, 2008 - June 1 2008.

Rules

  1. Submit 2 oz of clean, skirted, prime fleece and the completed Handcrafter's Spin Off Entry Tag in a clear, unmarked gallon-size ziplock bag. Note: you must submit 2 oz of fiber - there is no advantage to submitting more, however you may have points deducted for submitting less.
  2. Send in the following:
    1. Completed Handcrafter's Spin Off Entry form,
    2. Spin Off Entry Tag,
    3. Appropriate entry fees
    4. A photo of the alpaca (no larger than 4x6 inches)
    5. A copy of the ARI Registration Certificate
    6. A Buyer's Permission To Show Form (if applicable).
  3. Entries and Entry form must be postmarked by June 1, 2008.
  4. Fiber must have been sheared between May 17, 2007 and June 1, 2008.
  5. Fiber may not be carded, combed, washed or otherwise enhanced, but should be hand picked to remove debris and vegetable matter.
  6. Staple length must be a minimum of 3 inches and all other AOBA show rules concerning length of fiber apply.
  7. Entries are limited to two per breed type per color designation per age division at time of shearing.
  8. Judging Criteria:
    1. Luster(Suris) | Brightness(Huacayas)
    2. Cleanliness
    3. First impression
    4. Uniformity
    5. Ease of preparation
    6. Fineness
    7. Lack of second cuts
    8. Lack of gaurd hair
    9. Handle
    10. Lock stucture (Suris) | Crimp/Staple/Architectrue (Huacayas)
    11. Ease of spinning
    12. Hand feel and softness of resulting yarn
  9. Fiber that is unsound, felted, contains tender breaks, mats or excessive debris will be discounted. Fiber containing parasitic infestation or not meeting length requirements will be disqualified.
  10. Points may be deducted for failure to submit a minimum of two ounces.
  11. If less than 2 oz of fiber is sumitted and judges can not adequately evaluate the sample, the entry may be disqualified by the judges, at their discretion.

TB - True black BG - Beige IL - Indefinite light
BB - Bay black WH -White ID - Indefinite dark
DB - Dark brown DRG - Dark rose gray PT - Pattern
MB - Medium brown MRG - Medium rose gray PN - Pinto
LB - Light brown LRG - Light rose gray FN - Fancy
DF - Dark fawn DSG - Dark silver gray AP - Appaloosa
MF - Medium fawn MSG - Medium silver gray  
LF - Light fawn LSG - Light silver gray  
   
To enter
please send:

  • Filled out Entry Form
  • 2 oz of clean prime fleece with Spin-Off Entry Tag in a clear gallon sized zip top bag
  • Entry fee ($25/entry)
  • Photocopy of the ARI Certificate for each animal entered
  • Permission to Show form for each animal that has not had the ARI Certificate transferred to the current owner
